Alfalfa Tea recipe
I feed this to my roses just once a year, typically in the mid-season feeding. It is amazing for creating new basal breaks! Yay! We love basal breaks!!
I use a large plastic trash can that has a lid.
Recipe:
Make this ‘IN THE SUN’
20 - 25 cups of alfalfa pellets (Tractor Supply or Family Farm & Home)
Fill can with water
Find an old long sturdy stick or something you can use to stir your brew.
Let it sit a couple days then give it good stir. It will start to stink a little bit.
Put the lid back on and wait a couple more days. After a week of sitting in the water, I add a few cups of fish emulsion to it, and stir it again. By now it will smell horrible, but don’t worry, the roses love it!
I use a handled bucket or large 2 gallon watering can and dip it in the brew and split it between 2-3 roses, watering in at the base.
When it gets ‘sludgy’ in what you are pouring, you can add more water and let it ferment a couple more days, or use the sludge. It’s (sludge) not very attractive, but will eventually wash away into the ground with the rain. Or you could cover it with mulch, and it will slowly leach into the ground.
I wear disposable gloves when doing this, as it does truly stink, but the roses love it. After feeding with this, in a couple weeks, you will probably notice new basal’s emerging.
